History

Washizu Fort was one of the main forts built around Odaka Castle to contain the Imagawa. In particular, it could block the road to Narumi Castle. The forts themselves had relatively few defenders and were easily defeated by the overwhelming forces of Matsudaira Motoyasu (Tokugawa Ieyasu) at the Battle of Okehazama

Visit Notes

Along with Marune Fort these two are probably the most interesting forts around Okehazama to visit. They are also well signposted both at the site and along the road between Odaka Castle and Marune Fort. There are two entrances to the fort area, one at the bottom of the hill and one at the top. I recommend you take the path through the woods between both entrances regardless of which you start at. There is a long trench in remaining in the middle of the hill that you won't find at other forts.

Washizu-toride is an earthworks fort ruin in the Ôdaka neighbourhood of Midori Ward, Nagoya City. It is interesting and a little mysterious, and offers suggestions of remains which never fully come into focus. There appears to be trenches at the bottom of the castle mount, and terracing of the hillside with remains of dorui (earthen ramparts). These remains are easy to miss unless one is looking carefully. Since terracing can be accounted for with cultivation, and long trenches of this nature could be trails or old mountain roads, it’s difficult to parse these shapes in the earth. There is a monument stele at the top of the hill, but no consistently flat area which would constitute the main bailey. It’s fun to poke around here, but may disappoint those looking for something more definitive.
