Yamaguchi Yashiki
History
Yamaguchi-yashiki, or the Yamaguchi Shōya Yashiki, was the Edo Period residence of the magistrate of Horigane village. There were several powerful Shōya (village headmen) located on the Aźumi plain at that time, including at the yashiki of the Tada Clan and the yashiki of the Todoroki Clan, Todoroki Yashiki also at least partially extant. Horigane belonged to Matsumoto Domain, and the Lord of Matsumoto Castle would often stay at the Yamaguchi-yashiki when touring his domain. The residence includes a scenic garden, which is now designated as an important cultural property. The residence has also been maintained and features a main house and impressive gate. These latter day rural bukeyashiki are precious heritage, especially since many urban residences of lords, particularly at Edo, and their higher-ranking retainers, have been long lost.
Visit Notes
This extant Edo Period yashiki is apparently open to the public, but it was closed when I came, even though it was a weekend. It may receive a few share of visitors otherwise due to it being located between two parts of the Aźumino geo-cultural park which showcases rural scenery such as terraced fields and waterwheels; I saw many couples and young families wandering the rural neighbourhood.
