Background
Yōkōkan is the villa and daimyō garden of the lords of Fukui Castle. Other daimyō gardens near castles are very famous, such as Kairakuen in Mito, Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and Kōrakuen in Okayama, but this one, though smaller, has its own special charm, and the best thing about it is that the villa's structures are open to guests. These structures are reconstructions because the original villa buildings were destroyed by firebombing during the Pacific War. Restoration efforts were completed in 2004.
