History
Zuirenji-yakata was the Sengoku period fortified residence of Kurihara Nobushige. The compound's ramparts measured about 80m on each side. Zuirenji-yakata appears to have been a branch residence of Kurihara Yakata. Kurihara Nobushige was involved in the civil wars in Kai Province and was vanquished by Takeda Nobutora in 1567. The temple, Zuirenji, from whence the site derives its name, was constructed by Takeda Shingen in 1570. The temple's elegant millstone pavement was constructed in the late 18th century with millstones devoted by the congregation.
Visit Notes
I visited the site of Zuirenji-yakata as part of a bike ride around Yamanashi Prefecture; it was the second site I visited that day. The yakata is named for the temple now on site, and the temple, said to be founded by Takeda Shingen, is quite nice, and features millstones used as flagstones. The temple is partially surrounded by the remains of dorui (earthen embankments), some of which are buried beneath modern stone retaining walls.
