Fushimi Castle - Byodoin

平等院

Byodoin, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kyoto, even has structures moved from Fushimi Castle. They are not easy to identify but if you visit please look for them.

This red gate, the South Gate of Byodoin, is considered to be the oldest original yakuimon gate built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It uses a variety of giant red oak that was often used in the Sengoku Period for castle gates because it was hard and fire resistant. If you go to Byodoin through the main entrance you are unlikely to come across this gate because it is out the other side of the temple grounds. In fact, when I went looking for this gate I was "kindly" directed to a different route by a friendly guide/guard. When I mentioned I was looking for the relocated gate of Fushimi Catsle he not only guided me there but also pointed out another building from Fushimi Castle! The Yorinan (study?) of the Jodoin is also from Fushimi Castle. Unfortunately, you can only see the roof of the building in the last photos below, but it is an nationally registered Important Cultural property.
