History

The Hirai-yashiki was the medieval fortified residence of the Hirai Clan. The Hirai Clan was founded by Hirai Kiyotaka, the son of Minamoto Kiyomitsu. In the Sengoku period the Hirai Clan were vassals of the Takeda Clan, hegemonic rulers of Kai Province. Although it is not known when the Hirai built their yashiki here, it is estimated to have had an area of about 10,000m² (100m by 100m on each side) in a basic square formation.

Visit Notes

I visited the site of Hirai-yashiki as part of a bike ride around Yamanashi Prefecture; it was the first site I visited that day. Unfortunately there are no ruins of the yashiki (medieval residence), and the site is now a small village and vineyards. Whilst poking around, however, I realised I was being watched...
