Iwazushin Castle
History
Iwazushinjō was first built as one of the ‘Seven Castles of Iwazu’, at which time it was referred to as ‘Iwazu Upper Castle’. It was restored and expanded by the Matsudaira Clan at the time of the Battle of Komaki-Nagakute. The ruins of ‘Iwazu New Castle’ date to this time. More ruins apparently remained up until about a quarter of a century ago when the area was heavily developed for housing. For more information see my profile on Iwazu Castle.
Visit Notes
Iwazushinjō, literally ‘Iwazu New Castle’, is a flatland castle site in Iwazu Township, Okazaki Municipality. Although the site has been largely developed over, some notable ruins of earthworks remain. To the west of a spared patch of fields is a copse of bamboo. This bamboo hides earthworks of the medieval castle, including a segment of karabori (dry moat) and dorui (earthen ramparts), and perhaps the remnant of a dobashi (earthen bridge). I descended into the trench for a closer look, finding many bamboo shoots shooting up. The site is now fields and residential sprawl.
