History
Baba-yashiki, Kai Province, was the fortified residence of Baba Nobuharu, the general of Takeda Shingen who became the lord of Matsumoto Castle. Baba was originally from the Kyōraishi Clan whose residences were located to the north, past the Shingū River, where he originally resided. Baba was killed at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, and his son, Minbu Shōsuke, became lord of the manor. When Minbu was killed in 1582 at the Battle of Tenmokuzan the yashiki was abandoned.
Visit Notes
There are no remains on-site today of the former residence of the famous Takeda general, Baba Nobuharu, but a marker can be found in front of Hakushū Nursery, next to a small airplane. A relocated gate from the yashiki is located at a nearby temple, Jigenji. I inspected the gate but, though I was drawn by the sound of chanting, refrained from entering the main hall of the temple as a funeral was in process there.
