History

Kakimijō was the fortified residence of the Kakimi Clan from at least the early 15th century until 1438 (they relocated to Sakata County), and then later the Abei Clan (from Gamō County) under Abei Magobē. The Rokkaku and Kyōgoku clans clashed here during the Ōnin War (1467-1477). After the Ōnin War the territory was owned by Shinnyōji, a temple in Kyōto. In 1570 the Rokkaku Clan encamped at the castle as part of their campaign to reclaim their territory, but they were deafeated by Shibata Katsuie. Kakimijō was captured by Oda Nobunaga's forces after the defeat of the Rokkaku Clan. In 1571 Nagata Eitoshi was recorded as occupying the castle. Kakimijō was likely abandoned before the Edo period.

Visit Notes

I came to the so-called 'Himeyashiki (Princess's Residence)' area of Kakimijō, which is a presumed bailey site of about 60m by 80m, elevated higher than the surrounding area and surrounded by waterways thought to be the remnants of moats. The site of the temple Kongōji is reckoned to have been the main area of the castle. There is another area called 'Tonoyashiki (Lord's Residence)' in this area. The water ways in the neighbourhood are considered to have formed moats. Kongōji has some old looking stone walls but they probably date to the Edo period at the earliest. Accounting for all of these traces and the given area the castle must've been fairly complex with several parts.
