History

Suwa-Kasumiǵajō was the fortress of Teźuka Mitsumori who was a follower of Minamoto Yoshinaka. He fought in the battle of Shinohara in 1183, as famously described in the Heike Monogatari. The castle's later history is that of a Kanasashi Clan fortification protecting the holy shrines of Suwa, part of a network of fortifications and shrines in the area, and the closest castle to one of the shrines.

Visit Notes

The site of this castle is now an overflow carpark for the adjacent Suwa-Taisha shrine. A statue and explanation board relate to the castle. A bridge connects the castle ruin to the shrine passing over the road which was once a moat.
