History
Nishi Aoki Castle was one of the Taki clan castles which include Takikita-jo, Takiminami-jo, and Umegaki-jo. The Taki were one of the 21 main Koka clans to receive recognition from the Rokkaku for their support in the Omi-magari-no-jin.
Visit Notes
The castle has a main bailey 30m x 40m in a typical yakatajiro design. The Nishi (west) castle is paired with Higashi Aoki Castle (forthcoming), creating a castle pair, which is another common strategy for Koka Castles. The Nishi Aoki Castle seems to have a more well developed structure and design indicating it is the main castle of the pair. The pair is so close and the Higashi castle rather under developed so they are sometimes listed as one single Aoki Castle too.
