History

Kōrikijō was the fortified residence of the Kōriki Clan who served Matsudaira Kiyoyasu in the early 16th century, although the fort may have originally been built by Kumagaya Masanao in the 15th century. Kōriki Shigenaga and his son, Kōriki Yasunaga, were killed during the Oda Clan's invasion of Mikawa following the death of Matsudaira Kiyoyasu. Kōriki Kiyonaga, Yasunaga's son, was born at Kōrikijō in 1530. He served Matsudaira Hirotada, and then Matsudaira Motoyasu (Tokugawa Ieyasu). For his loyal service, he became one of the three magistrates of Mikawa Province under the Matsudaira in 1565, following the suppression of the Mikawa-Ikkō-Ikki uprising. During that rebellion, Lord Kiyonaga became known as 'Butsu no Kōriki (Kōriki of the Buddha)' for protecting buddhist statues from rioters. Kōriki Kiyonaga had a mild-mannered personality and was regarded highly by friends and foes alike (he was even a negotiator for Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the surrender of the Hōjō at Odawara Castle). Kiyonaga went on to serve as lord of Iwatsuki Castle in Musashi. Kōrikijō was abandoned by 1570.

Visit Notes

Kōrikijō is a fortified residence site in the Kōriki neighbourhood of Kōta Township, Nukata County. This site is completely developed over and no ruins remain. There are some nice temples in the vicinity, including Sansenji, however, and a large stele marks the site of the castle. The clan cenotaphs of the Kōriki Clan are found in the nearby neighbourhood of Ôkusa, at Shōrakuji, which is also the site of Ôkusajō.
