Magaribuchi Yashiki

History

The Magaribuchi-yashiki was the fortified residence of Magaribuchi Yoshikage. Magaribuchi Yoshikage, born 1518, was an underling of Itagaki Nobutaka, the tutor of Takeda Shingen. He rose from a lowly position to become a commander of an ashigaru (foot soldier) unit. After Itagaki Nobutaka was killed at the Battle of Uedahara, Magaribuchi Yoshikage fell under the command of Yamagata Masakage, serving under him during Takeda Shingen’s invasion of Shinano. During the siege of Hirakura Castle in 1557, it was Magaribuchi who defeated the castle’s commander, Iimori Moriharu, after braving a hail of arrows. He received a letter of commendation from and an audience with Takeda Shingen after the fall of the castle. Magaribuchi further served at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. He was a member of the Mukawa-shū known for his bravery and later served Tokugawa Ieyasu on a handsome stipend of 500 koku.

Visit Notes

The site of Magaribuchi-yashiki is located across the Kamanashi River from Daigahara-juku, an old inn town. There is a marker indicating the yashiki site but no clear ruins remain, and the ground is now part of a sacred grove. Opposite is Seitaiji, the Magaribuchi Clan’s bodaiji (ancestral temple).
