History

Mikumo Castle was the residence of the Mikumo clan, one of the senior families of the 53 Koka families and a trusted ally of the Rokkaku. Originally the Mikumo were known as the Kodama, one of the key lords of the Kanto region, but they moved to Omi in 1492 and took up the name Mikumo. Mikumo Castle was also called the 奥城 or the "secret fort" of Kannonji Castle. Stone walls at Koka area castles are very rare for this time period so the influence of Rokkaku in fortifying this, especially with the incredible volume of stonework at Kannnonji Castle, seems clear. The castle was used as a base to direct their guerrilla operations when Nobunaga attacked the Rokkaku in 1568, but it was defeated by Nobunaga in 1570. Parts of the stone walls were used to build the stone walls of Minakuchi Okayama Castle. After the fall of the Rokkaku the Mikumo worked for the Gamo and then became Hatamoto in the Tokugawa Bakufu.

Visit Notes

The castle is quite far from the station and a long road up the mountain, but with a car you can get to one of two parking lots very close to the castle entrance. Each of the baileys around the castle seem to be designed to provide great views of a different angle of the plain, Yasu River and Tokaido Highway.
