Mitobe Yashiki
History
Not much is known of Mitobe-yashiki, but it was the residence of Mitobe Ichizaemon and was protected by moats. Mitobe Ichizaemon served as the karō (chief vassal) of the locally powerful Kurita Clan; Mitobe-yashiki was a satellite fortification of Kuritajō.
Visit Notes
Mitobe-yashiki is a medieval fortified residence site in the urbanised Kurita neighbourhood of Nagano city. Behind a large apartment building there is a lane which leads to an old house surrounded by trees. It's hard to believe this rural homestead has hung on in such a heavily developed area. I wondered if there was anything in the trees beyond the residence. Apparently there is a nearby waterway which is said to be the site of a moat which protected the yashiki, and there is a waterway shown on maps in that tree line, but I couldn't find a way to get to it in the dwindling light. There's also an old and beautiful pine tree here which is under protection, and it dates to the time of the yashiki, being perhaps it's only standing remnant.
