Nanjou Yakata
From Jcastle.info
History
Nanjō-yakata was the fortified manor hall of the Nanjō Clan in the Kamakura period. In 1333, Nanjō Tokimitsu, the clan leader and lord of the manor, sided with Hōjō Takatoki during Nitta Yoshisada’s attack on Kamakura. Tokimitsu was killed during the capture of the capital, whilst other Nanjō clansmen such as Takamitsu and Tokitsuna continued to participate in the Nanbokuchō wars. Nanjō-yakata was converted into a temple, Myōrenji.
Visit Notes
Nanjō-yakata is a fortified manor hall ruin; it is now the site of Myōrenji, a temple. Ruins of the yakata can be found mainly in the north of the temple’s precincts in a shaded, forested area. Earthworks are evident in the form of dorui (earthen ramparts) and a segment of karabori (dry moat).
