Ohshima Jin'ya

From Jcastle.info

Ôshima-jin'ya was established by Ishikawa Sadamasa in 1651. Lord Sadamasa was the fourth son of Ishikawa Tadafusa, the lord of Ôgakijō - and later other domains, and Sadamasa inherited 7,000 koku worth of territory in Kamo County, Mikawa Province upon his father's death. Ishikawa Sadamasa served as the deputy head of Ôsaka Domain. Sadamasa died in 1653, and his successors ruled until the Meiji period.

Visit Notes

Ôshima-jin'ya is a hillside jin'ya site in the township of Higashi-Ôshima, Toyota Municipality. The jin'ya has several terraced baileys carved from the hillside, supported with ishigaki (stone-piled retaining walls). Since the site is now that of a private homestead, I only looked at the site from below. Some of the ishigaki did indeed appear to be quite old, though some sections look they have been restored in more recent times, particularly the tall portion with the long ishidoi.

Beneath some of the most castle-like ishigaki I found a tiny signboard, partially broken, announcing the jin'ya site. The forced perspective of the ishigaki looming over this tiny signboard made the ishigaki seem larger than it is.

From a distance I could see that there was another segment of ishigaki in what looked like the residence's garden; obviously I couldn't get close to this part, but it indicates an uppermost bailey was present which is now perhaps used only as an agricultural plot. Altogether there are three bands of ishigaki.
