Okiyama Fort

History

Little is known about the Okiyama Fort. It extends across a ridge starting about 700m from the base of Akatsuka Castle. The Kamakura Highway ran through the narrow strip of land between these two fortifications and the most narrow point is an area called Daimon (big gate) indicating that there was likely a large gate here and showing that the two fortifications worked together as one large defense. As a borderland castle between Hojo and Uesugi lands it seems natural that this long hilltop would have been a good strategic defense in times of unrest. It also nearly connects Akatsuka Castle to Shimura Castle creating one large defense.

Visit Notes

The Okiyama Fort is part of the Akatsuka Park. There are a couple places identified on maps as possible trenches and a side bailey, but more serious study of the site is required to understand to what extent it was used as a fortification. The castle is best visited in combination with Akatsuka Castle a 10 min walk away and possibly Shimura Castle.
