Sanada Yashiki (Kai)

History

The Sanada-yashiki in Kai was the fortified residence of Sanada Nobutada, dating to the late Sengoku period. He is also said to have had a residence to the west near Shinpujō but this has not been confirmed. Sanada Nobutada was the fourth son of Sanada Yukitaka and was sent as a child to be a hostage of the Takeda Clan. Takeda Shingen took a liking to him, however, and he became their vassal under the family name of Katsuno. He fought for Takeda Katsuyori up until 1582 and the demise of the Takeda Clan. In 1582 he supported the Tokugawa in their struggle with the Hōjō to take control of Kai. Yet the Sanada-yashiki is just east of the large complex of fortifications built by the Hōjō at Wakamikojō, and so it must’ve been a nail-biting time if the residence was already in place at that time... The Kai-Sanada became hatamoto (direct retainers) of the Shogunate during and throughout the entire Edo period.

Visit Notes

Little remains of the Sanada-yashiki, a fortified residence site in Sutama Township, except for some dorui (earthen ramparts). The site today is fields and a village. There was an idyllic path through the fields lined with many flowers. I noted two types of persimmon growing.
