History

Sano-yakata was the fortified manor hall of the Suda Clan. The Suda were descended from Suda Tanemasa, originally a member of the Shinano branch of the Minamoto Clan. They were related to the neighbouring Iba Clan too. Under Suda Sadatoshi the clan moved from Suda-yakata to this site in Sano and built a fortified residence in the Muromachi period. Suda Shichirōzaēmon, Suda Sadatoshi's grandson, helped Rokkaku Yoshiharu during the Kannonji Disturbance of 1563.

Visit Notes

What's the point in visiting minor sites like Sano-yakata? Even minor sites like this one have their treasures. Or at least, Sano-yakata did have some ruins. Up until very recently the remains of dorui (earthen ramparts) and a mizubori (moat) could be found in a bamboo grove here. But, alas, I was too late. The site has been developed as a suburban housing plot - it seems within the last year or so. I think it's important to keep a record of these minor sites. Precious traces of them may be lost at any time. A preserved historic site, the ruins of Hōdōji, is located opposite the yakata site.
