Tsubaki Yashiki
History
Tsubaki-yashiki was the fortified residence of Kira Yoshisada, son of Kira Yoshiyasu and his wife Shunkeini who was the aunt of Matsudaira Motoyasu (Tokugawa Ieyasu), in the late Sengoku period. Kira Yoshiyasu was the younger brother of Kira Yoshiaki, the lord of nearby Tōjōjō who had fought against Matsudaira Motoyasu and was defeated in 1562 (though not before decimating Matsudaira Yoshikage at the battle of Yoroiǵafuchi in 1561). Matsudaira Ietada took over as castellan of Tōjōjō but died of illness in 1581. Since he was not replaced as castellan of Tōjōjō, Tsubaki-yashiki was constructed instead with the Kira Clan, now intermarried with the Matsudaira, allowed to return.
The medieval residence is considered the forerunner of Okayama-jin'ya.
