Uchigoya Yakata
History
Uchigoya-yakata was an old residence of the Sanada Clan, and before that of the Yokō Clan. The former residence was built in a rectangular fashion, 100m east by west, and 50m north by south. This narrow area is naturally defensible with a river to the west and natural elevation surrounding. Little is known about the site but it is reported to have been built by Yokō Unememori with a dry moat in the west and south. It was later captured by Murakami Yoshikiyo and razed in 1551 with his defeat.
Visit Notes
The Uchigoya-yakata is located at the base of Uchigoyajō, on a rise north of the masugata entrance to the castle. Formerly a yakata (fortified manor hall) was located here. The site is now a field and I tentatively identified earthworks. Some old graves are located on site, and there are the remains of a moat, but access was limited. After here I visited Shinkōji, which is the Sanada Clan bodaiji (clan temple).
