Yokosearagamiyama Castle
History
Yokosearagamiyamajō was the main base of the Yokose Clan. Their fortified residence, Yokose-yakata, was located below the castle-mount. The two sites formed a jōkan pair, wherein day-to-day affairs were carried out in the residential halls, but the ridge above was used as a fortified redoubt in times of conflict. A large creek separates the two sites.
The Yokose Clan were vassals of the Nishina Clan. In the Sengoku period many fortifications were built by the Nishina and their vassals to protect the Nishina's eastern territory. The Yokose Clan guarded these mountainous hinterlands, repelling incursions from the Matsuzaki and Kōsaka clans to the east.
In the late 16th century, the Yokose Clan's fortifications were occupied by Kitazawa Magozaemon and Sakai Yomihē.
Visit Notes
Yokosearagamiyamajō is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin in Yasaka Township, Ômachi Municipality. The layout of the fort is lake a step-ladder made of earth, and the terraces are quite narrow. There are three terraces or sub-baileys beneath the top, main bailey. The main bailey has dorui (earthen ramparts) piled up on the ascending ridgeside. It seems a trench might've been dug where a road now runs. There are some old cenotaphs and a hokora (mini-shrine) on site today.
